Amine Treating

Engineered Amine Treating Solutions for Gas Sweetening

Overview

Amine treating is one of the most widely used and proven gas sweetening solutions for removing hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) from natural gas and hydrocarbon streams. Beyond meeting pipeline specifications, removing these contaminants supports product quality, protects downstream equipment, improves operational reliability, and helps facilities meet environmental and processing requirements.

The process uses a regenerable amine solvent (typically MDEA, DEA, or blended amines) to selectively absorb acid gases from the inlet stream before regenerating the solvent for continuous reuse. Its flexibility and proven performance make it the preferred solution across a wide range of upstream, midstream, LPG, Renewable Natural Gas (RNG), and industrial gas processing applications.

How 5Blue Delivers the Solution

5Blue engineers and fabricates modular and custom amine treating solutions developed around each customer’s inlet gas composition, operating conditions, treating requirements, capacity demands, and facility integration needs. Every solution is designed specifically for the application it supports—not adapted from a standard package.

Amine Treating Solutions

When to Choose Amine Treating

Amine treating is the preferred solution when reliable, continuous removal of H₂S and CO₂ is required to achieve a defined outlet specification. It is particularly well suited where acid gas concentrations exceed the practical limits of alternative treating methods or where long-term operating economics favour a regenerable solvent system.

Typical applications include:

  • → Sour gas requiring pipeline or sales specification compliance
  • → Gas streams with elevated H₂S and/or CO₂ concentrations
  • → Facilities requiring continuous, regenerable solvent systems
  • → LPG or condensate sweetening before downstream processing or sale
  • → RNG and biogas upgrading for pipeline injection
  • → Facilities with the utilities required for solvent regeneration

Equipment

5Blue engineers and fabricates custom amine treating units as integrated modular process solutions. Each system is configured to the specific process conditions and performance requirements of the facility it serves.

Typical equipment includes:

  • → Absorber (Contactor) column designed for project-specific gas flow, pressure, and amine circulation requirements
  • → Regeneration (Stripper) column with reboiler, condenser, and reflux system
  • → Amine circulation system including pumps, heat exchangers, flash tanks, and filtration
  • → Solvent management including rich/lean exchangers, storage, and make-up systems
  • → Instrumentation and controls designed to integrate with facility operating requirements
